Boxers triumph with Golden Gloves

24/07/2008 2:25:00 PM
MOE Youth Club Boxing Gym amateurs Scott McEwan and Josh Ferguson recently returned from Queensland with coveted Golden Gloves gold medals around their necks.

The prestigious award joined a collection of achievements for McEwan who was crowned the Australian junior champion back in 2006.

Since then the 18 year-old has gone from strength to strength and has racked up a silver medal in the national titles in 2007 and back-to-back gold medals in 2006 and 2007 at the Victorian titles.

McEwan's success at the Golden Gloves tournament has impressed club coach Paul Jenkins.

Established 21 years ago, the club has produced four Australian champions, including McEwan.

Jenkins believes there are many more fighters yet that he hopes will follow in McEwan's footsteps.

``I have five or so who are looking pretty good to fight and I have many more ready to get involved in some tournaments,'' Jenkins said.

``I have another fighter, Josh Ferguson, who also performed well and won at the Golden Gloves tournament.

``When both Scott and Josh go to compete outside of Victoria the other states will see them as the ones to beat because they are the best in their division in Victoria.''

The nationals will be held at Townsville in Queensland and Jenkins is looking forward to the competition which will test his fighters.

He said he constantly reminded his fighters that no matter how serious the bouts, they had to remember to enjoy themselves.

``If you don't have fun you don't achieve many goals and you get stale,'' Jenkins said.

``You can tell early on if one of your fighters is going to have the `stuff' to become something greater and usually it's the ones that come in and are really good straight away that take off.

``They find it too easy and don't bother to stay while it's the ones that need a bit of work who are determined to get better. They stay for a long time.''

Jenkins said other fighters including Matt McEwan and Brody Doran are performing well and expects them to go far when they are a little older.
