Redsox suffer their first defeat

7/08/2008 2:08:00 PM
TRARALGON Redsox lost their first Latrobe Valley Baseball Association A grade match in two years after going down to Churchill Braves 10-4 on Sunday.

It was the first time Braves defeated Redsox in eight years.

Braves led from the start, bringing in four runs in the first inning.

Some brilliant pitching by Grant Irving, who took 16 strikeouts for the day, saw to it that Redsox remained scoreless until the second where they managed to score one.

Braves answered with another in the third.

John Kus, pitching for Redsox, shutout the Braves in the fourth, while his team had their best inning with the bat to score two, closing the gap to a 5-3 lead for Braves.

Irving continued his onslaught and shutout Redsox for the next three innings. Braves increased their lead little by little, to be 7-3 up by the top of the eighth inning.

Braves cemented their win with another three runs in the last inning, while Redsox could only manage one.

Best Braves: Matt Bucci (four safe hits and very effective at short stop), Irving, Shane Gill and David Radovich. Best Redsox: James O'Rourke, Andy Matthews and Kus.

Another upset was played out at Newborough with Dodgers defeating Morwell Cougars for the first time this season.

A fast paced game resulted in a very tight contest.

Both teams hit the ball well but tight fielding kept scoring to a minimum.

The difference between winning and losing came down to costly unforced errors, which Dodgers mostly avoided, while Cougars managed six to bring in four unearned runs for their opposition.

Dodgers scored the first two runs for the game in the bottom of the first inning after shutting Cougars out in the top.

Good pitching by Dodgers' Brett Wilson and Cougars' Luke Hornstra made it an exciting game to watch.

Cougars scored their first two runs on a Hornstra homerun in the top of the fourth inning to level the score 2-all, but good hitting by Jason Smith and Simon Wilson brought in another for Dodgers in the fifth and they inched ahead once more.

Batting was even throughout and the pitching was fast but a couple of Cougar fumbles allowed Dodgers to score another two runs to finish with a 5-2 win.

Best Dodgers: Brett Wilson, Simon Wilson, Jason Smith and Nathan Simpson. Best Cougars: Ricki Collins, Hornstra, Chris Cumming and Chris Heppleston.

The results of the two games has returned Churchill Braves to second spot on the ladder, after sitting behind Cougars in third spot for the past few weeks.
