Pegs need one more win for promotion

A SECOND half hat-trick by Daniel Cairns helped Morwell Pegasus demolish Brandon Park 6-1 on Saturday.

The win took the Horsemen another step closer to becoming the State League Division 3 champions with only four games remaining.

Pegs atoned for their close loss against Springvale City last week.

In one of their best performances for the year, Pegs were never threatened by Brandon Park and were on the attack from kick-off.

Cairns' speed and Paul Byrne's skill caused damage on the wings and with the return of Frank Albanese from suspension, Pegasus was almost at full strength despite the absence of Matt McDermott through injury.

Albanese and Clayton Bell had their chances at goal with Bell firing off a few early shots but Brandon Park's keeper easily accounted these.

In the 25th minute Damien Cassar broke into the box only to be tripped with the referee pointing to the penalty spot.

Albanese lined up and sent the keeper in the opposite direction, scoring Pegs' first for the day.

Brandon Park's first real opportunity came at the 35 minute mark when Pegs keeper Michael Bonnefin was called in to make a finger tip save over the bar.

Byrne was unlucky not to add a goal to his name when he connected onto a Bell cross only to have his header saved.

On the opposite wing Cairns continued to cause trouble.

Towards the end of the half he fired in a shot at goals and this time Byrne made no mistake, giving the ball a gentle nudge on its way and the keeper had no hope.

At the half time break Pegasus was 2-0 up.

After the restart Pegs did not slow down and within 10 minutes they added another goal after a clever one-two between Albanese and Bell found Chris Repetowski, who easily drove the ball home.

However Brandon Park snatched a goal back when Robert Benedos took advantage of a defensive error from Pegasus to beat Bonnefin and bring the deficit back to just two goals.

Despite the small setback Pegs continued to push forward.

After 20 minutes Cairns beat a sea of players to header Pegs' fourth goal and the start of his hat-trick.

Cairns found his second a few minutes later after he finished off a brilliant solo run by scoring Pegasus' fifth.

Brandon Park was tired and struggled to pull together to stop Pegs' onslaught.

Pegs' midfield had no trouble setting up Bell and Albanese up front, and Byrne and Cairns continued to cause issues for Brandon Park on the wings.

Even substitutes Joshua Tanti, Connor Clarke and Chris Cairns provided a good performance when they were brought on from the bench.

Pegs sweeper Jarrod Pirotta was solid in the defence and played well in his first senior game for the year.

But Pegs were not done yet.

A clever sequence of passes again found Daniel Cairns who took on the keeper and beat him, completing his hat-trick.

Cairns was a clear standout on the pitch and deserved best on field honours but credit also went to the remainder of the team which held together to produce an amazing performance after last week's loss.

The 6-1 victory ensured Pegs retained its six point lead on Heatherton United.

The side has increased its gap on Springvale City to nine points.

A win next week against Boroondara Eagles will almost ensure Pegs will play State League Division 2 next season.

The reserves game was cancelled due to the weather.
