Moe and Morwell must win

7/08/2008 2:10:00 PM
MOE and Morwell again face danger games against Drouin and Garfield as they battle for third spot on the West Gippsland Latrobe football ladder.

Both sides will be hoping Traralgon can cause an upset and beat Maffra.

The Lions and Tigers scored character building wins against Traralgon and Garfield last weekend.

The Tigers will lose Marcus Webb, possibly for the season, and Daniel Metcalf will be out for a couple of weeks with a hamstring.

Andrew Petrou is carrying an injury, which paves the way for Luke Norder to come back into the side.

Morwell's greatest asset is its fast play-on style of football and the Tigers can cut up a side very quickly.

They need a dry surface to show their best but the Drouin ground will be heavy and the Hawks play well on their home territory.

Morwell has not got a good track record at Drouin having lost two of the past three games there.

Ryan Allan is having a great season and is in the running to win the goal kicking for the league.

With 41 goals he is equal with Maffra's Jack Tatterson and three goals behind Traralgon's Tim Aitken and Sale veteran David Ivey.

The Hawks play Moe and Maffra in the next couple of weeks and their incentive is to stay clear of the wooden spoon.

If Morwell is to be a threat in the finals it must win this one.

Third spot in Moe's sights

MOE will play on a good surface at Garfield and should have Gary Blandford back to play in the midfield, which is a bonus for the Lions.

Adam Kennedy came out of last week's game unscathed and he will provide good moral support for coach Troy Makepeace.

Jason Shields is creeping closer to the elusive 300 game milestone and only needs to survive this week to make it a reality this season.

Ashley Payne was great against Traralgon and can play at either end of the ground. His first quarter last week was superb and he keeps improving.

Both sides are real scrappers and love a tough contest.

Garfield will be playing for pride as it has had a rough season with a few distractions both on and off the field.

The Stars will be playing their last home game for the season as they travel to Maffra the following week and finish the year with the bye.

No doubt the Stars will treat this match as their `grand final' and will fight it out until the end.

At this stage of the season Moe cannot afford to relax and with third spot in its sights, Makepeace should have the edge over former team-mate Brent Eastwell and lead his side to victory.

Eagles to overcome jetlag

TRARALGON takes on Maffra and with the advantage of a heavy home ground the Maroons could worry the reigning premiers.

Last weekend the Eagles played in New Zealand and may suffer a bit of jetlag.

Adrian Burgiel may be ready to come back into the team and he is a focal point at full forward.

Maffra showed it does not need the Burgiel brothers as the Eagles flogged Warragul convincingly a couple of weeks ago.

The Eagles have the incentive to win as it is their 900th senior game of football since joining the Latrobe Valley Football League in 1960.

The Eagles have experienced hard times along the way, having to wait more than 50 years between premierships, but they have more than made up for it in the new millennium playiong in the last six grand finals and winning five.

With that as an incentive Maffra will step up and show its true form for the rest of the season and win this game.

Sale at full strength

SALE is home to Leongatha and will appreciate firm footing on its home turf.

Quite a few players were missing last weekend and are likely to be available this Saturday.

The Parrots scored a good win against Drouin and will be keen to get another win to get them off the bottom of the ladder.

Their track record at Sale is not bad, having won 20 to 19.

However against a Sale side that should be near full strength, the Parrots' winning days for the season may be over.
