 Magpies out for revenge

Magpies out for revenge

15/08/2008 11:48:00 AM
MORWELL will clash with Sale in the penultimate round of West Gippsland Latrobe football in a possible preview of this year's grand final.

On Saturday members of the Tigers' 1988 premiership team that defeated Traralgon will be honoured before the match and this will give them an added incentive to win.

Their recipe for success that year, according to the official annual report, was dedication and fitness, pre-season recruiting coups and the selectors' unyielding policy of picking balanced teams.

That year the Tigers went through a mid season slump but turned their season around against Bairnsdale.

For five players, Stephen Allison, Peter Henderson, Rod Kerr, Alan Lowe and coach Brett Stanistreet, it was their third premiership with the Tigers.

Club runner Peter Petrou was also a member of the successful team. There were nine players who had more than 150 games each.

None of the current team has that sort of playing experience.

Only Adam Bailey has more than 100 senior games at Morwell but Liam Visser, Nathan Scurrah and coach Jason Macfarlane have played a lot of senior football with other clubs.

Since 1988 the Tigers have won two premierships in 1993 and 1996 but they need to keep the momentum going to make 2008 their year.

This weekend the Magpies will be out for revenge after Morwell beat them by five points in a high scoring game at Sale in round eight.

That match was one of the best in West Gippsland Latrobe this year.

Despite the wintry conditions now prevailing, the Morwell ground is expected to be in great condition and another top contest is on the cards.

Morwell will be missing Robert Michaelides and Andrew Petrou but will regain Julian Blackford (ankle) and Daniel Hutchison (flu).

Michaelides and Petrou, and a few other reserves footballers, will be attending the wedding of Nick Michaelides in Fiji.

While it may be a little early to talk about premierships, the winner of this match will have a psychological advantage as they may not meet again until the grand final.

Hawks to push Lions

MOE'S Jason Shields plays his 199th senior game when the Lions take on Drouin at home.

The former Footscray player has two club best and fairest wins to his name and a Trood Award and Rodda Medal in 2000.

Last week Drouin pushed Morwell to the limit and will do so against Moe this week.

However this will be a good chance for the Lions to regroup and prepare for next week's big clash against Sale.

Parrots no match for Gulls

WARRAGUL, after a one-week rest, takes on Leongatha and should have few problems taking the four points.

Stars look for repeat of thrashing

MAFFRA was humbled by Traralgon last week and takes on a side that inflicted its heaviest defeat in recent years, Garfield.

Memories of the drubbing are still fresh in the Eagles' minds but the way they played against the Maroons it is hard to see them getting revenge.

They are still expected to beat Garfield in what should be a great match.

16/12/2008 | So we now have desperate parents attempting to bribe teachers to get their children into a selective high school. What a sad indictment of our education policies, the holy grail of which is parental choice.
