Cougars win one-sided game

15/05/2008 2:56:00 PM
MORWELL Cougars finished clear winners against Sale Rangers on Sunday in Latrobe Valley Baseball Association A grade.

With Rick Collins pitching for Cougars, Rangers had a tough time making any headway from the start.

Collins took 11 strikeouts during his five innings on the mound and allowed only two safe hits.

With no runs scoring, Cougars held a one-sided 11-0 lead.

Cougars had a field day with the bat, with safe hits coming thick and fast.

They scored 10 runs by the bottom of the third inning.

A Ranger pitching change, putting Adrian Hector on the mound in the bottom of the fourth inning, effectively put a dent in the Cougars' batting with only one run crossing the plate over the next four innings.

Rangers seemed more comfortable with the Cougars' pitching change in the top of the sixth inning.

When Martin Kennedy took the mound Rangers got a score on the board, bringing in four runs over the final two innings. But it was too late to change the result and Cougars won 11-4.

Best Cougars: Collins, Chris Cumming, Luke Hornstra and Kennedy. Best Rangers: Ben Laux, Adrian Hector, Chris Cox and Will Hector.

Traralgon Redsox recorded a comfortable 8-2 win over Moe/Newborough Dodgers.

Both sides were scoreless until the top of the third inning when an Andy Matthews homerun brought in two runs for Redsox.

In a tight game scores were locked at 2-0 until the sixth inning, when Redsox managed another two runs and with another in the seventh they had a 5-0 lead.

However Dodgers had been threatening with runners on base and a Tim Wilson solo homerun in the bottom of the seventh gave Dodgers their first score on the board.

They could not capitalise further with scores remaining 5-1 until the ninth inning.

Redsox managed another three runs off the pitching of a tiring Duane Baker to claim the game.

Dodgers again had runners languishing on base in the bottom of the ninth and could not score more than one run, finally going down to Redsox.

Best Redsox: Matthews, Jude Power, John Kus and Davis Long. Best Dodgers: Wilson, Baker, Jason Smith and Kirk Went.

Ladder: Traralgon Redsox, Churchill Braves, Morwell Cougars, Moe/Newborough Dodgers, Sale Rangers.

B grade

RANGERS had a 5-3 win over Cougars in a very tight contest, with scores tied at 1-1 after three innings.

Cougars hit well with nine safe hits to Rangers' three, but were unable to convert.

Will Hector performed brilliantly at short stop and Bruce Garner took five great flies at centre field for Rangers, effectively stopping Cougars from bringing in the runs.

Cougars put A grade catcher Chris Cumming on the mound for the first four innings, where he played a blinder, taking 10 strikeouts compared to the opposition's five over six innings.

Best Rangers: Hector, Garner, Trevor Langford and Nicole Garner. Best Cougars: Cumming, Chris Heppleston, Steve Caldwell and Nigel Aubrey.

Redsox were convincing winners over Dodgers with a final score of 13-5. In another tight contest Redsox were ahead 4-3, after four innings.

Some costly errors at third base by Redsox gave Dodgers the window of opportunity but Redsox rallied strongly to score four runs over the last two innings to take the win, with the assistance of some terrific batting by Josh Graham who had a homer in his bag of hits.

Dodgers' David Robinson also collected some important hits.

Best Redsox: Graham, James O'Rourke and Don Saunders. Best Dodgers: Robinson, Phil Cervi and Dale Watt.

Ladder: Traralgon Redsox, Churchill Braves, Morwell Cougars, Moe/Newborough Dodgers, Sale Rangers.

C grade

RANGERS chalked up their second win 14-8 over Cougars after getting off to a four run lead in the first inning.

Cougars were left behind as Rangers scored eight in the top of the second, making it a mammoth task for Cougars.

They rallied to bring in eight over the next two innings but the damage was done.

Best Rangers: Tim Hector, Bill Hector and Josh Scicluna. Best Cougars: Chris May, Anthony McMillan and Troy Franssen.

Dodgers took their first win for the day over Redsox 19-8.

Strong batting and homeruns were the order of the day for both sides with Dodgers' Simon Shaw and Redsox' Wayne Beames managing three homeruns apiece.

Dodgers tallied up another 30 safe hits, including one homerun for both Darren Crockford and Dale Watt, to Redsox' 22 safe hits.
