THE VOLUNTEER - Raelene Billingsley

4/08/2008 12:55:00 PM
RAELENE Billingsley joined the Morwell State Emergency Service (SES) 17 years ago because she wanted to help people.

But that experience doesn't mean she's used to attending crashes.

The SES volunteer said the last two months had been ``madness'', with a huge spate of collisions.

``Your pager goes off and you think `not again','' she said.

``It's just gone crazy.''

Raelene said some crashes affected her more than others did and rated the recent crash between a bus and a semi-trailer at Traralgon as the worst she had seen during her time in the SES.

She said she had played the event over in her mind for a couple of days afterwards to see if there was anything she could have done differently.

Raelene spent three hours in the bus helping to free trapped Traralgon man, Nathan Marriott.

She said one thing that had helped her through the emotional stress of working on freeing the passenger and driver from the crash was the feeling of teamwork that everyone involved had displayed.

``There was a feeling of pride in the teamwork, everyone just pulled together,'' she said.

``I could look out of the bus and say `I need a spanner' and I know someone would get it for me no matter what uniform they had on.

``The teamwork and the outcome and a sense of pride from that job is one thing that has made a difference to me, everyone was focused on those two men.''

Raelene said she had attended a crash where she had known the person trapped in the vehicle.

She said that type of situation was about keeping your cool.

``If it's someone you know, you want to help more,'' she said.

``You just take a couple of deep breaths and let your leader know so that they can keep an eye on you.''

The SES provides counselling for its volunteers after a major incident.
