Samantha sets sights on job

4/08/2008 12:49:00 PM
MORWELL waitress Samantha Macklin said she may be vision-impaired, but there's absolutely nothing she can't do.

Her success in life however, depends on other people seeing her abilities.

Lucky for Samantha, the staff at Claudia's Cafe in Morwell were more than willing to find a role for her in their busy diner.

Born with albinism, Samantha has always been very short-sighted and experienced light sensitivity.

She said it had been difficult to find work because people were often worried about what she could or could not do.

``In the past people have been wary about giving me a go, because often they think if I can't see it (properly), then I can't do it,'' Samantha said.

``Often people are worried about my safety and everyone else's (in the workplace), so they come off a little stand-offish.

``But I know I can do everything everyone else can do, with just a little bit more time and some adjustments.''

Samantha said she had focused on further education when she had trouble getting a job during high school, eventually enrolling in a Bachelor of Behavioral Studies at Monash University Gippsland.

Financial pressures took her back to the job market and eventually led her to employment agency, Work Solutions Gippsland.

Claudia's Cafe owner, Claudia Davies said she had found out about Samantha through two customers and Work Solutions employees, Wade Walker and Ross Egan.

``Wade and Ross came in to get coffee and were talking about (potential) workers and I said `what about us?','' Claudia said.

``They told us about someone who would be perfect for the job and they told us about Samantha and her vision, and we said `nothing insurmountable there'.

``She's really sweet, kind, intelligent and obviously as a university student she's got a great brain behind that great attitude.

``She fits in here like a glove. We'll definitely keep her around.''

Claudia said the business would easily make adjustments for Samantha such as enlarging the size of the table numbers to make her job easier.

Samantha said she had worked in a restaurant kitchen before but her new job would enable her to expand her skills.

``I absolutely love it here and everyone's so friendly,'' she said.
