Public backs post petition

15/05/2008 2:46:00 PM
HUNDREDS of people have signed a petition to save Traralgon's iconic Franklin Street post office.

The charge has been led by Liberal candidate in the Gippsland by-election, Rohan Fitzgerald who has circulated the petition in the CBD and at local events.

Australia Post has made no decision on the future of the site but is understood to be ``assessing its options''.

``Traralgon residents and shop owners deserve an iron-clad guarantee from Australia Post that postal services, including bill pay and parcels, will not be moved from this historic site,'' Mr Fitzgerald said.

``As a Traralgon local myself, I know that the post office is an important and iconic building in our town and the service it provides from its Franklin Street site is easily accessible to all, including the elderly and the disabled.''

The petition is at Mr Fitzgerald's office at 17 Franklin Street, Traralgon or can be accessed online at www.rohanfitzgerald.com
