Olympic stamp of approval

4/08/2008 12:47:00 PM
FREELANCE photographer Delwyn Hewitt has created some Olympic history of her own following her selection by Australia Post to take part in a project to commemorate the 2008 Beijing Olympics.

The former Latrobe Valley resident was signed up by Australia Post to take a photo for its only domestic 2008 Olympic stamp which was released last Friday.

The 50 cent stamp depicts the sport of basketball, with two other international stamps representing cycling and gymnastics.

Australia has teams in all three sports.

Delwyn said she was honoured and privileged to have worked on the project.

But it wasn't all fun and games for Delwyn who worked tirelessly for about three months to get the stamp and its design right.

``Australia Post came up with a particular design so I had to shoot very specifically to the brief,'' Delwyn said.

``They gave me more of a visual brief and there were some words attached to it but they gave me a mock-up and you can tell by the photo that they wanted a specific body shape.

``You can see on the photo the basketball helps form the number eight which has been incorporated into the design.''

The word for eight in Chinese sounds similar to the word which means `prosper' or `wealth' and is considered very lucky.

The Olympic games have been scheduled to commence at 8pm, on the eighth day of the eighth month of 2008.

After the photo was taken, Delwyn worked with Tasmanian graphic designer Lynda Warner to get the layout right.

``Then the stamp layout was handed over to Australia Post who determined whether the stamp was right or not,'' Delwyn said.

``They finally approved it and then the stamp was ratified by the International Olympic Committee (IOC).''

The limited edition stamp will be for sale until 29 August.
